Since the early 1800s, people have traveled to Capon Springs for healing and relief from pain and stress. The word “Capon” is derived from a Native American word that means “medicine” or “healing waters”.
The Pavilion, built by the state of Virginia around 1850, was Capon’s first “official” Bath House. Under a doctor’s guidance, guests would “take the waters”, first in brick-lined baths (the remains are still visible under the Pavilion) and then later in more “modern” claw-foot porcelain tubs.
Our Hygeia Bath House and Spa was modeled after the original style, but with today’s innovations and conveniences. Now guests will once again be able to enjoy these soothing water treatments.
The Hygeia Bath House and Spa gets its name from Hygeia - the Greek goddess “responsible” for the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health. The present day Fairfax was originally named the Hygeia. (This was probably due to its close proximity to the Spring.) It is believed that it was Captain Sale - Capon’s proprietor from 1875 till his death in 1900 - who gave the building that name.
When Lou Austin acquired the Capon Spring and adjoining property in 1932, one of the dreams he had for Capon was to create “…a spa for the practice of natural healing, using God’s gifts for body, mind and spirit…” (Lou Austin, An L.L.A. Anthology)
This newest addition to Capon brings us full
circle with Capon’s
beginnings, all the while, honoring the dream of present day Capon’s
co-founder, Lou Austin.
Whether it is a soothing water soak or a healing touch treatment, the Hygeia Bath House and Spa enhances the Capon tradition of helping each guest relax, recoup and enjoy life.
