tom austin poem

Only God knew what was in store for Virginia and Lou,
When they purchased this property back in 1932.
The rights to the spring water were what they wanted to buy;
And though deep in The Depression, their spirits were high.

Soon they recruited many of their new neighbors,
Who were willing to put in a very long day.
They helped to restore these historical buildings,
While making their work seem almost like play.

During the ‘40s, guest attendance would grow,
For a tank of gas was as far as they could go.
While our troops were fighting a war overseas,
So many sought this haven for much needed peace!

Through the ‘50s, Capon attracted a large number of meetings.
The dining room was expanded to accommodate more seatings.
Many families would retreat here for two weeks at a time;
Watching sunsets on the golf course suited most just fine!

The ‘60s were magical for me and my cousins,
As families returned every year by the dozens.
Growing older in the ‘70s meant that we went to work;
Yet to live here at Capon was a pretty nice perk!

By the mid-1980s, we had lost both Virginia and Lou;
Parents, aunts and uncles dreamed of other things to do.
So when the decade of the ‘90s finally rolled around,
The 3rd Generation took to stewarding this most sacred ground.

So now as we celebrate seventy-five years of success,
It’s truly our guests AND our co-workers that make us feel blessed.
We’ve come almost full circle with the new spa it seems;
For the sharing of this water was one of Granpa’s precious dreams.

So it’s quite an honor to open Capon’s doors for 2007;
Once again sharing with you, this special piece of heaven!
