2025 Season starts Thursday, May 1st 2025 Calendar & Rates

People have been drawn to Capon Springs to drink and “take the waters” for hundreds of years. And long before that, Native Americans  recognized the healing qualities of the water and marked the location where the spring comes to the surface with petroglyphs (sacred images carved into rocks). But, many of you may be wondering… what is it exactly that makes Capon Springs Water so special?

On this #WorldWaterDay 2022, we thought we would share more about the geology of the area and the qualities that make Capon water unique and tasty!

The Capon Spring

The famous Capon spring rises to the surface at the break between two vertical geological synclines of Oriskany sandstone that form the symmetrical backbone between White Cliff and Bear Ridge.  The estimated depth of the underground aquifer where Capon water is stored is about 1,600 feet.  Rainfall has been recharging this deep reservoir for centuries, taking up to 70 years to complete the water cycle and seep back to the surface.  The last 300 feet the water passes through the sandstone formation, which, because of its porous nature, serves as a natural filter.  Capon water flows at a constant rate of about 60 gallons per minute, 65% of which is needed when our lodging is at full capacity.  Because Capon water when it reaches the surface maintains 65-degree temperature, it is geologically classified as a warm spring.  Guests who jump in the pool might not agree!

Benefit to the Body

The hydrogeology (the science of the movement of water below the Earth’s surface) of the area produces an alkaline water with a pH of 7.2.  This proper balance allows for Capon water to neutralize the buildup of acid in the body, providing a multitude of health benefits.  Since the human body is over 60% water, having good, clean water is essential to our well-being.  And because of the 300′ filter, it has a sweet clean taste, improving drinkability, which leads to better overall hydration.

An Inspiration

Capon water is also an inspiration for those who travel to surround themselves with it.  Here is an original song called, “I Hear the Water Calling,” which was written and performed by longtime guest, Ronan Murphy and his songwriting group during their 2021 Song & Sound Retreat at Capon.  Can you hear the water calling you?!

Capon water was also the topic of a recent talk by our own, Jonathan Bellingham, at the 32nd Annual Berkeley Springs International Water Festival.  During the talk, Jonathan shared the amazing story of how Capon water has continued to flow through the American experience from the 1700s to today. You can watch Jonathan’s 20 minute talk here (scroll over to minutes 14 – 36 to hear Jonathan’s portion– be sure to check that the video is unmuted).  It’s 20 minute that’ll change your life!
